Adelaide Hoodless

Adelaide Hoodless

Adelaide Hoodless

Adelaide Hoodless (1857-1910) was born and raised on a farm in western Canada. Her father died when she was still a baby and her mother fought and worked hard to keep the farm and the family afloat. After her marriage, Adelaide led an easier life but was devastated by the death of her baby son. It is generally believed that the infant died from ingesting contaminated milk. It was this tragedy that spurred her to reach out to women, especially those living in rural areas, and found institutes which would support fellow wives and mothers. Primarily, her goal was teaching women the knowledge and skills they needed to take better care of their families. Adelaide Hoodless is recognized with having helped establish the Women?s Institute, the YWCA, and VON (Victorian Order of Nurses). She also wrote several course outlines which would serve to teach home economics in schools. She died while giving a speech at a college in Toronto.

The Environmental Fallout of Greener Buildings

Newer homes are remarkably energy tight thanks to superior insulating materials that are in wide circulation today. The energy savings can be substantial ? homeowners can use up to 60% less energy in the most efficient green homes. Now, a study published by a team of researchers in Building Research & Information makes it clear that the very materials that provide us with such energy efficiency are pumped full of harmful flame retardant chemicals. These chemicals, HBCD (hexabromocyclododecane) and TCPP (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, are related to banned and phased-out substances like DDT, pentaBDE, and Tris. They are environmentally persistent, bioaccumulative, and are being manufactured at a frenetic pace without thought to how they might impact our environment and ultimately, our health.

The study focuses on foam insulation material: the spray-foam insulation you may have applied to fill a leaky attic as well as foam board insulation popular in green buildings for its excellent insulating properties. These materials are regularly treated with the flame retardants HBCD and TCPP to meet building standards for fire safety. But building codes do not specifically require the addition of flame retardants to foam insulation and the study shows that the presence of ?? thick drywall itself is enough to provide fire safety for many uses. So why are they being added at extra expense to manufacturers and unknown risk to us?

Two Types of Building Insulation

A local builder in my neighborhood shows off the environmentally friendly recycled newsprint insulation he has been working with since 2005 (right). But the city of Denver requires him to spray two inches of foam insulation (left) as a barrier in applications where there might be moisture. So much for being green.

Tens of millions of pounds of these flame retardant chemicals are being produced each year worldwide, with building insulation being the primary application. HBCD, the flame retardant added to polystyrene insulation, is currently being produced at a rate of 68 million pounds per year. Because of its highly bioaccumulative nature, HBCD is poised to become the 22nd chemical banned under the Stockholm Convention. In animal studies, it interferes with hormones and affects the developing nervous system.

The situation with TCPP isn?t any rosier. Data from the year 2000 in the EU shows it was being produced at a rate of 88 million pounds per year. Unlike HBCD, it tends to associate with water rather than fat and accumulates in the kidneys and liver. TCPP is found globally in groundwater, wastewater, and wildlife. Unfortunately, even if we completely stop production tomorrow, HBCD and TCPP will be a problem for decades to come; the similarly persistent pesticide DDT is still causing reproductive problems for the endangered California condor and can be found in every person tested by the CDC despite its being banned since 1972.

This alludes to a larger story about regulation and the power of industry. We tend to think that consumer products in this country are generally safe ? surely someone is watching to ensure that they are not harmful to us or to the environment. A few areas, like pharmaceuticals, do benefit from government oversight to ensure companies are cautious and deliberate before bringing products to market. But for the vast majority of the products that are introduced to the public each year, there is no requirement that manufacturers prove what they?re peddling is not harmful, even if it contains substances that have known track records in animal studies or other equivalent evidence of toxicity. This industry-friendly approach is not the only model out there ? it stands in sharp contrast to the EU?s Precationary Principle that places the burden of proof upon manufacturers to demonstrate a product is not harmful before distributing it for sale. Given the high stakes of such persistent environmental pollutants, it seems reckless to pump them into the environment with no long-term management plan, particularly since there are safer alternatives. At least in this one instance, our efforts to ?green? up our energy consumption may be digging us deeper into a very different environmental hole.

The good news, as today?s study suggests, is that these chemicals are in many cases unnecessary additions to building insulation. They can safely be removed without affecting fire safety. So, for once, we can have it all: buildings that are safe, energy-efficient, and easy on the environment.

Boult's performances praised ? Cricket News Update | bettor.com

Boult?s performances praised ? Cricket News Update

Following his impressive performances in the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka, Trent Boult has drawn praise from his Northern District coach, Grant Bradburn, who feels that time out due to injury has had a positive impact on his overall development.

The left-armer spent a lengthy time on the sidelines after suffering a back injury on tour of Australia in 2009. He nonetheless battled those tough periods before making his first Test appearance late last year, and has since then has become a permanent figure in the national team.

Bradburn, who has worked closely with the player and watched him fight injury, was quick to heap praise on the pacer?s improved outing, and attributed his recent success to the hard work the player has put in to get fully fit and the determination he has shown to prove his mettle at the international level.

Boult has been a revelation in the ongoing series against the Lankans, where he has ably shared the new ball with Tim Southee. He claimed two scalps in the opening Test, and further claimed one more until day 3 of the currently played second clash. His worth was first pointed out by Southee, the team?s leading wicket-taker in the series, who attributed his own success on his partner?s ability to create pressure at one end.

The 23-year-old has generated appreciable swing, and further provides his side with an important left-arm option. Bradburn was quick to praise his maturity, and feels that a lot has to do with the injury he sustained early in his career.

"I'm really impressed with the way he's bowling. It looks like he's found confidence and his feet at international level, which takes some time. He's very assured of what he's doing, has a very good understanding of his skill and what his weapons are, and he's reaping the reward of the work he's put in."

"He's learnt to be so much more personally accountable with his training and his own game. He's always had the skills, no doubt about that, and he's really starting to flourish," Bradburn said, as reported in the New Zealand Herald.

Boult will be hoping to cement his side?s position in the side by claiming the final Sri Lankan wickets when play resumes on day 4. The hosts trail by 187 runs. ?

France?s Depardieu detained for drunken driving

PARIS (Reuters) - French actor Gerard Depardieu was detained for driving his scooter while drunk on Thursday after he had a minor accident in Paris, prosecutors said.

The 63-year-old star of films such as "Jean de Florette" and "Green Card" was held for questioning after he fell from his scooter mid-afternoon, slightly injuring his elbow.

No-one else was hurt in the accident.

One of France's best-known actors for roles in more than a hundred films, Depardieu has recently grabbed headlines for the wrong reasons.

The incident came just months after a car driver filed a legal complaint for assault and battery against Depardieu in August following an altercation in Paris.

Last year, Depardieu outraged fellow passengers by urinating in the aisle of an Air France flight as it prepared to take off, forcing the plane to turn back to its parking spot.

A passenger on the flight said Depardieu appeared to be drunk and insisted he be allowed to use the bathroom during takeoff, when passengers must remain seated.

750,000 US Xbox 360 consoles sold during Black Friday week

Microsoft has been throwing out some big numbers today. Earlier, it revealed that 25 million people were actively using its Outlook.com service, and?later in the day it said that it has sold a total of 40 million licenses for Windows 8.

Now, Microsoft's Larry Hryb posted on his Major Nelson website that Microsoft sold 750,000 units of its Xbox 360 console during the week of November 18th, which includes Black Friday, in the US. He also claims that during that same week, the number of Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, " ... increased more than 50 percent compared to last year?s Black Friday week."

In addition Hryb said:

  • We saw incredible activity on Xbox over the weekend. For example, on Sunday alone we had more than 14 million people on Xbox LIVE across the world, racking up more than 72 million hours of use in just one day.
  • Compared to 2011, we?ve seen a 43 percent increase in U.S. entertainment application hours logged on Xbox LIVE during the week of Black Friday.

Nintendo bragged on Monday that it had sold 400,000 units of its Wii U console during its launch week last week, along with 300,000 units of the older Wii console. If those numbers and those of Microsoft's are indeed true, it looks like the Xbox 360 will still be the best selling console in the US for the month of November. So far, Sony has yet to comment on sales of the PS3 and the PS Vita during Black Friday 2012 week.

ICANN, Make a Difference

Internet cafe in Nairobi A cybercafe in the Kibera slum in Nairobi

This article arises from Future Tense, a joint effort of Arizona State University, the New America Foundation, and Slate that looks at emerging technologies and their implications for policy and for society. On Thursday, Nov. 29, Future Tense will host an event in Washington, D.C., on the future of Internet governance. To learn more and to RSVP, visit the New America Foundation?s website. The event will also be streamed.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is little known, but it wields a tremendous amount of power: It controls all of the Web?s top-level domains (those letters after the ?dot,? like .com and .org). Currently, ICANN is in the midst of creating hundreds (and possibly thousands) of new, generic top-level domains (gTLDs) that span a host of different ideas, from .web to .cars to .anything_else_you_can_imagine. These new gTLDs have the potential to dramatically affect the future of Internet browsing, and they?re already stirring up some serious discussion. (Saudi Arabia, for one, doesn?t want .gay, .bible, or other dozens of other proposed domains to be approved.) But the auction process to distribute them also has the potential for even greater impact than currently envisioned.

ICANN?s new generic top-level domain process has been dragging on for years?basically since the organization?s inception in 1998. But this year, it is finally coming to fruition, and as early as April 2013 we are likely to see the first group of new gTLDS?in essence, ICANN will empower specific legal entities to control how to use and sell these domain names. This process means significant amounts of money may start rolling in soon: It already costs $185,000 to apply for a gTLD, but when there are multiple bidders for the same string?like .web or .app?they will be put up for auction.

For instance, the .web gTLD is widely desired by a number of different organizations, as it is the most likely contender to possibly challenge the king of all gTLDs: .com. There are currently eight applicants for .web, including Google, German Internet giant 1&1, and incumbent registry operator Afilias (which manages .org and .info) among other bidders. We expect that the bidding for .web alone is likely to be in excess of $5 million and could potentially reach $10 million or more. For the .app gTLD, there are 11 applicants?and we may see a titanic bidding war between Google and Amazon. There are hundreds more contended strings that are likely to go to auction and raise tens of millions of additional dollars?even $100 million isn?t out of the question.

All told, there are more than 1,900 applications for roughly 1,000 unique strings in this first wave. The $185,000 application fee is intended to fund the ICANN process, but the proceeds from contention auctions are considered ?excess funds? that are not already earmarked to cover costs. The challenge will be to use these proceeds in a way that best benefits the public interest and the global Internet. In talking with key stakeholders over the last couple of years, everyone agrees that allocating these funds will be a challenge and likely to be fraught with politics.

We've been involved in the ICANN process since its inception, and believe that these proceeds can and should be used to do something game-changing and truly visionary: build and maintain free wireless Internet infrastructure for huge swaths of the continent of Africa or an equally disconnected, high-poverty area of the planet. This is an audacious idea that many might originally dismiss as impractical?but that's because their thinking is stuck inside the box. We know that it can be done?and how. Providing free wireless Internet infrastructure for the continent of Africa would be a dream come true?the kind of outcome that would help bridge the digital divide and garner huge socioeconomic benefits for decades to come.

But would $100 million actually be enough to build useful, sustainable infrastructure? It would, if its creators use many of the newer ?mesh? technologies that are now coming online. African's Internet penetration currently hovers around 15 percent?less than half the world average. And roughly half of African countries have single-digit broadband penetration rates. The digital divide looms large, in no small part because many Africans simply cannot afford current broadband prices.

To help solve this problem, we can use what are called mesh technologies, which are significantly cheaper than the systems we use in the developed world. More importantly, they can easily interconnect and extend existing infrastructure in remarkably cost-effective ways. Instead of connecting people through a central hub or tower, mesh architectures resemble more of a spider web, in which data can flow through a large number of routes to reach their destination. Because there's no single point of failure within a mesh network and because of the redundancy of pathways within these systems, they're often more resilient?harder for human intervention or natural disaster to take down as well as more difficult to surveille and censor.

Projects like CommotionWireless.net and OpenGarden.net have developed game-changing technologies that allow existing cellphones to connect with each other directly, for free. They can also share bandwidth from one cellphone throughout an entire network of devices, allowing people who don't have Internet connectivity to browse the Web or send email via someone else's connection. Now what's needed is a bold, widespread implementation of these technologies. There's no reason Africa shouldn?t take advantage of new technologies and new business models to provide a modest amount of connectivity each month for anyone who wants it.

In essence, what we're proposing is the widespread unlocking of existing technologies, the creation of hybrid networks that take advantage of recent advances in ad-hoc wireless networking, and the digital enfranchisement of the billions of people who cannot afford to participate in current business models. Providing basic connectivity is not expensive?more importantly, unlocking devices and allowing peer-to-peer connectivity costs absolutely nothing.

A $100 million intervention would enable a wide-ranging proof-of-concept of today's cutting-edge mesh wireless technologies. It would demonstrate the viability of new hybrid networking architectures that opportunistically used for-fee services when necessary and offload to free alternatives whenever possible. It would enable us to try out numerous innovative business models. And most importantly, it would point the way forward?helping solve the problem of how to grant access to the Internet's vast resources to the substantial majority of humanity who are not meaningfully online.

With the gTLD auctions now pending, ICANN has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change the digital destinies of billions of people. With ICANN's help, we can realize a world where Africa rivals any country on the planet when it comes to online connectivity. And where African citizens can take it for granted that meaningful (online) civic participation is universally available. We've already seen how even modest resources like the mobile micropayment system M-Pesa have helped spur a new generation of entrepreneurship?imagine what's possible when free connectivity is available to all.

More Ways the New Health Insurance Rules Help You - Insurance ...

by Jen Thorpe | More from this Blogger

health and money The Department of Health and Human Services recently revealed details about new laws for health insurers. In a previous blog, pointed out how those laws help you and your family. In this blog, I go over more new rules, and how those are going to help your family with health insurance.

The new rules make it clear that health insurance plans must cover items and services in a minimum of 10 categories that were defined by the Affordable Care Act in 2010. Each category is defined as "essential health benefits".

Those categories include: ambulatory patient services, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use disorder services (including behavioral health treatment), prescription drugs, rehabilitative and rehabilitative services and devices, laboratory services, preventative and wellness services and chronic disease management, and pediatric services, (including oral and vision care).

Those are the types of things that a typical employer health plan would cover. Soon, all health insurance plans must include that type of coverage. This means your family can buy health insurance that is not connected to your place of employment, and still get those essential benefits covered.

Another change stops insurers from increasing a person's premium by a lot of money when a person reaches a certain age. The new rules say that premium rates cannot vary by age for individuals who are under the age of 21.

Right now, when a person hits a certain age, (the age that moves them from one "age band" to another), insurance companies raise the cost of the person's premium. That can make it too expensive for a person to keep their insurance.

To prevent this, insurers will have to spread out that cost. Insurers can charge slightly more each time a person has a birthday, (but not nearly as much as they would have otherwise charged). That stops when a person hits age 63. Everyone over 63 will pay the same rate (no matter how many more birthdays the person has). This will make things more affordable.

The proposed rules say that insurance companies can charge people who use tobacco 50% more than the customers who do not use tobacco. This is not good news for people who smoke. However, there is an option that can help with the extra cost. Insurers can offer an exemption of that higher cost to people who try to quit smoking.

The new laws also give employers permission to provide discounts on health insurance to workers who achieve certain medical or fitness goals. Those goals can include losing weight (or maintaining a specific weight), lowering their cholesterol level, or lowering their blood pressure.

This is good for people who get their insurance through their job. Some healthy choices can make your premiums be less expensive. You have some control over that.

Auburn fires Gene Chizik after 3-9 season

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) ? Gene Chizik led Auburn to a historic season but couldn't keep the Tigers from descending to their lowest point in decades.

The rapid fall from a national championship to 3-9 and the Southeastern Conference doormat led to Chizik's firing Sunday, the day after a humbling 49-0 loss to No. 2 Alabama that showed just how far the program has fallen.

The Tigers endured the worst slide within two years of winning a national championship of any team since the Associated Press poll started in 1936 and hadn't lost this many games since going 0-10 in 1950. The decision came 17 months after Auburn gave Chizik a contract worth some $3.5 million annually through 2015 with a hefty buyout.

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said he informed Chizik Sunday morning after President Jay Gogue accepted his recommendation to fire the coach.

The players were informed in a team meeting Sunday. Jacobs scheduled a news conference for later in the afternoon.

"I'm extremely disappointed with the way this season turned out and I apologize to the Auburn family and our team for what they have had to endure," Chizik said in a statement released by Auburn. "In my 27 years of coaching, I have gained an understanding of the high expectations in this profession. When expectations are not met, I understand changes must be made."

The Tigers went from 14-0 with a perfect SEC record with Cam Newton leading the offense in 2010 to 3-9 and 0-8, losing their final three league games by a combined 150-21. Auburn was blown out by Texas A&M (63-21) and Georgia (38-0) but the finale was even more painful for Tigers fans.

The Crimson Tide cruised to a six-touchdown halftime lead and the second-most lopsided Iron Bowl victory in history, behind only the Tide's 55-0 win in 1948.

"While we experienced a tremendous low in 2012, I will always be proud of the incredible highs that we achieved, including three bowl victories, an SEC championship and a national championship," Chizik said.

He was 33-19 in four seasons and 15-17 in SEC games.

Auburn said the total buyout for Chizik and his assistant coaches is $11.09 million. Chizik's buyout is expected to total $7.5 million and will be paid in monthly installments for the next four years.

Six assistants are under contract through June 30, 2013 while defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler and wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor have deals extending another year beyond that.

The buyouts could be reduced if the coaches find other jobs.

Auburn joins Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky as SEC teams with job openings showing the huge divide in a league with six teams ranked in the Top 11.

Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen said players gave Chizik a warm ovation after the team meeting.

"I think we did what he deserved and we gave him a standing ovation and clapped for him," he said. There's so much love for coach Chizik on this team. Would we have loved to see him get another year, another opportunity? Yes, but at the same time we understand where Jay Jacobs is coming from. Three wins isn't going to cut it in our league."

Defensive tackle Jeff Whitaker said, "It's kind of crazy right now. I had a special bond with Coach Chizik."

Chizik inserted tailback Tre Mason on the final play against Alabama to get him to 1,000 yards. The next day, Mason saw his coach get fired.

"It was a rough day for everybody," Mason said. "It's tough. There are going to be a lot of tears shed because there are a lot of relationships that may be put on hold or come to an end today. I have nothing negative to say about coach Chizik. He's done a lot for me and this program. I wish him the best of luck in his future."

Chizik had sandwiched two 8-5 seasons around the national title, but never approached the success of 2010, when Newton won the Heisman Trophy. The Tigers were 7-17 in SEC games outside of 2010 during his tenure.

His hiring was criticized by some fans after Chizik went 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State and lost the last 10 games of his first head coaching job.

Jacobs was heckled at the airport after making the hire.

Chizik had been defensive coordinator on unbeaten teams at Auburn and Texas.

A search committee comprised of former Heisman Trophy winners Pat Sullivan and Bo Jackson and former Tigers fullback Mac Crawford will assist Jacobs, the school said.

A transition year might have been expected.

Chizik had to replace the offensive and defensive coordinators after last season. Chizik made an ill-fated switch from Gus Malzahn's no-huddle, spread offense to a pro-style system with the hiring of former Temple offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler.

The Tigers struggled in the transition, partly because of shaky quarterback play and ended the season with freshman Jonathan Wallace under center.

Auburn ranked at or near the bottom of the SEC in every major statistical category offensively and defensively.

Chizik's tenure was marred by off-the-field problems, too, to the extent that he had employees of a private firm run curfew checks on players this season.

Four members of the 2010 national championship team were arrested on robbery charges in March 2011. Antonio Goodwin was convicted in April and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Dakota Mosley, Michael McNeil and Shaun Kitchens are awaiting trial.

Two-time 1,000-yard rusher Mike Dyer transferred to Arkansas State with Malzahn after being indefinitely suspended before the bowl game.

Freshman quarterback Zeke Pike was arrested in June for public intoxication and later dismissed from the team. Starting center Reese Dismukes was suspended for the opener against Clemson following a public intoxication arrest.

Auburn is also the subject of an NCAA investigation that includes the recruitment of Memphis running back Jovon Robinson, who was ruled ineligible after a guidance counselor admitted to creating a fake transcript.

The Birmingham News reported on Wednesday that NCAA investigators had interviewed at least one assistant coach and several players during the week leading up to the Iron Bowl.

Chizik's contract includes a clause that it wouldn't owe the buyout money if he is fired for cause, including findings of major rules violations or significant or repetitive violations" involving him or his program.

Chizik and Auburn have weathered past NCAA scrutiny. The governing body closed investigations into the recruitment of Newton and allegations from four former players that they were paid thousands of dollars during their college careers.

49ers use Kaepernick, defense to top Saints 31-21

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Dashon Goldson turned Marques Colston upside down just as the receiver leaped for a pass over the middle.

As Colston landed on his head and lay motionless for several seconds, safety Donte Whitner snagged the deflected pass on New Orleans 42 and weaved his way past Drew Brees and Co., all the way to the end zone.

That was but one of the big plays turned in by a San Francisco defense that was as brutal as it was spectacular in a 31-21 victory Sunday that snapped New Orleans' three-game winning streak and put a dent in the Saints' playoff hopes.

"We know how good our defense is, especially coming off of last week's (32-7) win against Chicago," 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis said. "When it counted, our defense held together and won the game for us."

Colin Kaepernick was the winning quarterback for the second time in as many starts, which will only prolong the debate in San Francisco over whether Kaepernick deserves to retain the starting job that he inherited when Alex Smith went out with a concussion.

"That would be coach's decision," Kaepernick said. "I'm just trying to take a similar approach that I've been taking, just keep my head down, keep working and see where it takes me."

It may not have mattered who played quarterback for the 49ers in New Orleans.

The Niners' defense had two interceptions for touchdowns, one each by Whitner and linebacker Ahmad Brooks, and a pass rush led by Aldon Smith sacked Brees five times.

"That was a real rough, tough, physical football game," San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh said. "Big plays by the defense really swung the game for us."

Kaepernick was solid in his second career start, while Alex Smith, deemed healthy enough to suit up after recovering from a concussion, watched from the sideline. Kaepernick passed for 231 yards, including a short touchdown to Frank Gore. He also ran for a 7-yard score on a read-option run that fooled the Saints' defense. He threw his first career interception, but it was inconsequential.

Kapernick committed two false-start penalties, was saved by receiver Randy Moss from throwing a second interception, and the Niners' offense became the first this season to gain fewer than 400 yards against a Saints defense that came in ranked last in the league.

"We got a win," Kaepernick said, "so that's all that really matters."

Harbaugh implied the decision to start Kaepernick had more to do with Smith's health than performance, but he was noncommittal about who might start next weekend at St. Louis.

Smith did not seem to think he required more time to heal.

"Obviously I want to play. I want to start. I think I should, but it's not my decision," Smith said. "I'm part of this team and it's great to go out and get a win."

Brees finished with 267 yards and three TDs. One of Brees' scoring passes went to Marques Colston, who set a Saints record with his 56th career touchdown for the club, surpassing Deuce McAllister.

New Orleans (5-6) managed only 59 yards rushing against San Francisco (8-2-1).

The Niners gained 144 yards rushing, led by Gore's 83. San Francisco tight end Delanie Walker had three catches for 81 yards, including one for 45 yards to set up Gore's touchdown.

The Saints inserted recently acquired reserve William Robinson at right tackle after rookie Bryce Harris, making his first start because of injuries to Zach Strief and Charles Brown, was carted off in the first quarter with an apparent right leg injury. But just about every Saints lineman was beaten on a Niners sack. Brooks, Aldon Smith and Justin Smith each had 1? sacks.

"When you lose your right tackle and you've got to play with a young man who's been here four days, that's a tough challenge," Saints assistant head coach Joe Vitt said.

San Francisco's interceptions came during a 21-0 spurt that turned a 14-7 deficit into a 28-14 lead.

"You give them two free ones and that's what they thrive on," Brees said. "All of a sudden they rattle off 21 points in a short amount of time and we really felt like we had the game under control."

Brooks snagged the first, returning it 50 yards late in the first half to tie the game at 14.

Whitner's came on Brees' first pass of the second half, making it 28-14.

The Saints, meanwhile, missed a chance to pull into a tie for the last NFC wild card berth, and remain a game out with another tough game coming up at Atlanta on Thursday night.

NOTES: Saints DT Brodrick Bunkley was thrown out for unsportsmanlike conduct with 1:05 left for kicking lineman Alex Boone in the back of the helmet right after the Saints had blocked a field goal ... Niners WR Kyle Williams and RB Kendall Hunter both were shaken up on the same play in the second half with apparent leg injuries. ... Saints S Isa Abdul-Quddus left the game after a hard collision with Walker in the fourth quarter.

Hamilton wins pole position for Brazilian GP

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Lewis Hamilton won the pole position for the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix on Saturday, while Formula One leader Sebastian Vettel will start fourth and title challenger Fernando Alonso eighth.

Hamilton set a lap of 1 minute, 12.458 seconds with his McLaren at Interlagos, just .055 in front of teammate Jenson Button.

Vettel's Red Bull teammate Mark Webber will start third after a lap of 1:12.581, with Vettel behind him following a run of 1:12.760.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa was fifth after clocking 1:12.987, while teammate Alonso only managed a lap of 1:13.253, hurting his chances of overtaking Vettel for the championship.

Vettel needs to finish fourth or better on Sunday to become F1's youngest three-time champion at age 25. Alonso, also seeking his third title, needs at least a podium finish to have any chance of overcoming a 13-point deficit in the standings.

Vettel said a mistake at the end of the qualifying session cost him a chance to start closer to the front, but he didn't think the result was "a disaster."

"Maybe it's not the best position that we could've gotten, but still we can be quite happy" he said. "I think there are more people behind us than in front of us. If we were 24th, than that would be disappointing, but I'm happy with fourth and there's plenty of opportunities for tomorrow in terms of tactics."

Hamilton, who won the 2008 championship at Interlagos, will be driving his last race with McLaren before joining Mercedes next season. He is coming off a victory at the United States GP last week.

"I think we put ourselves in a really good position and we are just going to do the best that we can from here, working together as a team," Hamilton said.

McLaren has been strong all weekend and seems set to play a role at the title showdown between Vettel and Alonso. Hamilton led the practice times on Friday and Button did the same earlier on Saturday. Vettel was always close behind the McLarens, while Alonso was well behind the pace.

Drivers had faced very warm temperatures during practice but it dropped significantly for qualifying. It started raining about half an hour before the timed session but it stopped by the time the cars hit the track. The top teams waited several minutes to avoid the slippery conditions at the tricky 2.8-mile track in South America's biggest city.

Michael Schumacher, preparing for his final race before retiring for a second time, couldn't do much with his Mercedes and will start 14th.

Mexican Sergio Perez, taking over Hamilton's seat at McLaren, will start 13th with his Sauber.

Lotus driver Romain Grosjean didn't make it past the first qualifying session after running into the back of Pedro de la Rosa while trying to make a pass at the front straight. He got off the throttle to avoid running into the slower HRT but it was not enough, forcing him to return to the pits for a new front wing.

Vettel enters the deciding race in a comfortable position to win his third title. He has been dominant recently, finishing on the podium in the last six races and winning four of them.

A fourth-place finish will be enough on Sunday even if Alonso wins the race. And if the Ferrari driver is second, Vettel can clinch the title by crossing the line seventh or better. The German driver holds the tiebreaker because he has more wins than Alonso ? five to three.

Vettel has a chance to become the first driver to win three titles in a row since Schumacher won five straight from 2000-04. The only other driver to win at least three consecutive titles was Juan Manuel Fangio from 1954-57.

Alonso hasn't won a race since the German GP in July, but he finished on the podium in six of the final seven races, including the last four.

It will be the sixth time since 2005 that the F1 season will be decided at the Brazilian GP. Alonso won both of his titles at Interlagos in 2005 and '06.

Red Bull has won the last three races at the track, with Vettel second to teammate Webber last year.

Schumacher, F1's most successful driver, retired for the first time in 2006 after winning seven world titles. He returned in 2010 with Mercedes, but struggled and managed only one podium finish, at the European GP in July.

Cops: Road rage theory in deadly I-95 crash

NBCWashington.com/Abingdon Fire Company

Handout image of the scene, provided to NBCWashington.com by the Abingdon Fire Company

By NBCWashington.com

Two people were killed and three others were hospitalized after an accident on Interstate 95 in Harford County, Maryland, early Saturday morning.

Investigators say that the accident took place at around 2:00 a.m. on the northbound side of Interstate 95 at Maryland Route 24, near Abingdon.

Investigators believe one of the victims may have been involved in a road rage incident just prior to the accident, and are looking for the occupants of a dark-colored Jeep.

Maryland State Police say that 31-year-old Veney Tanner, Jr., of Abingdon, and 17-year-old Janelle Jackson of Baltimore were killed when the 2005 Lexus driven by Tanner was struck by a box truck while entering the fast lane of traffic. Authorities say the Lexus caught fire after traveling off the left side of the roadway.

Maryland State Police Corporal Kevin Watkins is credited with extracting Tanner, Jackson, and a third passenger -- 38-year-old Myron Doram of Randallstown, Md. -- from the burning car. Watkins was treated and released from Upper Chesapeake Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Tanner was pronounced dead at Chesapeake Hospital, while Jackson was airlifted to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was also pronounced dead.

Doram and the driver of the box truck, 63-year-old Clinton Griffin of Newark, Del., were taken to Bayview Hospital. There is no word on their condition.

Investigators believe Tanner may have been involved in a road rage incident involving the Jeep shortly before the accident. Authorities say that both vehicles were pulled over on the shoulder past the exit for Maryland Route 24 and at one point, people were seen getting out of the Jeep and walking toward the Lexus. According to investigators, at least one person was seen banging on the windows of the Lexus.

Police say that Tanner suddenly pulled out from the shoulder and back on to the highway just before the Lexus was struck by the box truck. The exact cause and nature of both the dispute and the crash is under investigation.

Coach Jeff Fisher realizes something has to give when the Rams, who haven?t won in five straight games, face an Arizona team that has lost six straight.

Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton said that the intended message of the reduced use of S Adrian Wilson was ?do your job and do your job well.?

The Seahawks emerge from the bye week healthy and rested and ready for the stretch run.

Las Vegas Real Estate Blog: Bank Foreclosures Start Again in Las ...

First, a little background:

Most large banks (Bank of America, Wells Fargo, etc.) are members of MERS, the Mortgage Electronic Registration System. This system allows a third party entity, like Recon Trust, to transfer notes between members of the system without recording the deed of trust into the new note holder?s name. So the name on the deed of trust and the name of the new note holder do not match since MERS was not required to record these documents. This made it difficult, if not impossible, for a homeowner facing foreclosure to actually find out who was foreclosing on them and try to work out an agreement. Many homeowners were foreclosed upon without ever being able to contact the existing note holder.
So in light of these national ?robo signing? scandals, Nevada was among 11 states that enacted legislation to protect homeowners and regulate illegal foreclosure activity. In Nevada, Assembly Bill 284 was passed which required a bank employee to sign an affidavit stating that to the employee?s personal knowledge all previous transfers of the note were correct before the bank could start the foreclosure process.
Since there is no bank employee that could possibly attest to previous transfers of a note, AB284 effectively stopped the Las Vegas bank foreclosure process in Nevada, and foreclosure filings dropped from around 6,000 per month to less than 1,000. (Not all banks were affected by AB284 since they were not members of the MERS system.)

In October of 2012, however, the Nevada Supreme Court ruled that banks using the MERS system would be able to foreclose on properties as long as the note holder and the name on the deed of trust matched prior to the foreclosure sale. ?This ruling will allow the third party entities used by MERS to record a deed of trust in the name of the current note holder and consummate the foreclosure process. Recording the deed of trust gives homeowners the opportunity to contact the note holder and work out a settlement, but doesn't allow them a "free ride" to stay in their homes indefinitely with no payment.

What this means for the Las Vegas real estate market:
The housing inventory has been at an extreme low for the past eight months, with bank owned foreclosures of Las Vegas single family homes accounting for only 10% of the active listings at any given time. Active short sales account for about 20% of the active single family listings and the rest are ?real? sellers. It?s a ?seller?s? market, prices have risen steadily since January, there are multiple offers on most listings within days of coming on the market, and buyers are finding it difficult to make a purchase unless they bid above appraised value. ??

Banks have started the foreclosure process again, and we do expect new inventory to begin?hitting the market after the first of the year, probably in or March or April. However, the banks do still have very stringent hoops to jump through, and there is no huge wave expected all at one time. Still, there should be more?listings on the market, allowing frustrated homebuyers the opportunity to finally get an offer accepted. Hopefully we will get back to a more balanced market that remains steady for the next few years. A balanced market is better for both buyers and sellers and the local economy.

Breast Cancer Awareness: Staying In The Pink Of Health | Asian ...

By David Dickson | Editorials
November 22, 2012

David Tan takes a look at the annual Pink Ribbon campaign that aims to increase breast cancer awareness and raise funds for cancer research.

AsianScientist (Nov. 22, 2012) ? Unless you are a hermit living far from civilization, you would surely have come across a pink ribbon or two this past October.

As the pink glow of October?s breast cancer awareness campaign recedes, pundits are starting to assess the benefit of the pink movement.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign began in 1985 and the pink ribbon that now symbolizes the cause was first given out at a New York City race for breast cancer survivors in 1991. Since then, the trickle of pink into the public consciousness has grown into a flood each October.

At first glance, large-scale breast cancer awareness campaigns appear to be hitting all the right targets. After all, they have brought the issue to the fore, helping remove the stigma associated with cancer, as well as encouraging women to practice self-examination and attend regular check-ups. Campaigns also have significant psychological impact in offering support to breast cancer sufferers.

Show me the money

However, not everyone is convinced of the overall benefit. For starters, some critics feel the breast cancer awareness movement has grown to such a staggering scale that most of the funds raised are used to sustain the campaigns themselves instead of going toward cancer research.

For example, the Susan G. Komen foundation that initiated the pink ribbon movement in the first place, has recently come into the spotlight for only spending 15 percent or US$63 million of the money it raised in 2011 on research. The rest was spent on education, screening, and treatment, which while useful, divert resources from those trying to find solutions.

Others feel that the well-intentioned movement has been hijacked by companies seeking new opportunities. Indiscriminate use of the color pink or the pink ribbon to associate products with the breast cancer awareness campaign for commercial gain has become more widespread of late. So much so that Breast Cancer Action described the blatant profiteering as ?pinkwashing, ? a portmanteau of ?pink ribbon? and ?whitewash.?

To screen or not to screen

One hotly debated topic surrounds the benefit of breast cancer screening. In focusing on early detection as prevention, the Susan G. Komen foundation has been criticized for overselling mammograms and under-representing the risks.

Writing in the British Medical Journal in August this year, Dr. Steven Woloshin and Dr. Lisa Schwartz argued that the survival statistics used in advertising campaigns by the foundation were unreliable and made screening appear more beneficial than it actually was. According to them, ?For every life saved by mammography, around two to ten women are overdiagnosed.?

Some say screening tends to identify tumor types that are indolent and cause no harm. Before the BMJ report, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2010 found that while screening mammograms saved lives, there was five to fifteen times the number of women who were unnecessarily diagnosed and treated for cancers that turned out to be harmless.

In late October this year, an independent UK panel investigating the benefit of breast cancer screening found that while screening extends lives, it also led to overdiagnosis. Publishing in the medical journal, The Lancet, the panel found that for every breast cancer death prevented, there were three overdiagnosed cases identified and treated.

And just this week, another report in the New England Journal of Medicine by two MDs, Archie Bleyer and H. Gilbert Welch, presented more data collected over three decades in the US. They found evidence for ?substantial overdiagnosis accounting for nearly a third of all newly diagnosed breast cancers, and that screening is having, at best, only a small effect on the rate of death from breast cancer.?

Giving pink some street cred

Another bugbear of critics is how the language of breast cancer campaigns has recently changed to appeal to the younger generation. Some campaigns have veered into risqu? territory with slogans such as ?Feel your Boobies? and ?Save the Ta-Tas,? in the name of standing out from the crowd. Critics have responded with accusations that they do more harm than good by sexualizing the disease.

?It sexually objectifies women, trivializes breast cancer? and uses the objectified woman as window dressing for the profit-making machine,? explains writer Gayle Sulik in an interview with USA Today.

Others feel that such campaigns simply reinforce the image of breasts being a woman?s most prized possessions, which magnifies the psychological pain endured by women who have had mastectomies.

What say the researchers?

A key area that lacks attention from current campaigns is information on the results of breast cancer research. Charities should take the lead in explaining these so the public can begin to understand the nature of this highly complex disease.

Recently, an international consortium of scientists published the most comprehensive analysis yet of breast cancer. Looking at 825 breast tumor samples, they found that the cancers could be divided into four main classes that are better treated as separate diseases to determine the optimal treatment.

As Dr. Matthew Ellis, Chair of Oncology at Washington University and co-leader of the study, explains:

?With this study, we?re one giant step closer to understanding the genetic origins of the four major subtypes of breast cancer. Now, we can investigate which drugs work best for patients based on the genetic profiles of their tumors.?

Clearly, breast cancer comes in many shapes and sizes and no single magic bullet cure can be developed to treat it. In fact, it is more helpful to think of breast cancer as a family of different diseases with their own characteristics, which influence the type of treatment needed.

This is exactly the type of information that needs to be broadcast to update the public about how research is advancing our knowledge of the disease and how to treat it. Better understanding of the disease itself would make expectations easier to manage.

Dr. H. Gilbert Welch, who co-authored the recent NEJM study confirming the trend of overdiagnosis, believes that healthcare providers should focus on treatment options.

?They can look less hard for tiny cancers and pre-cancers and put more effort into differentiating between consequential and inconsequential cancers,? he wrote in a New York Times editorial.

Despite being mired in doubt about their benefit, money raised through breast cancer awareness campaigns that filter through to cancer research has led to improvement in treatments as well as our understanding of the disease.

And so, distractions aside, I still bought a pink ribbon this year.
